Standard direction(s) of travel: Eastbound or westbound
Season: The trail can be hiked at any time of year, though summer and fall typically offer the nicest conditions. The shelter areas are stocked with firewood over the winter, also making it an ideal winter destination for snowshoeing trips.

Permits and Regulations
Camping is only permitted at designated shelter areas along the trail. These shelter areas typically consist of several shelters that are available for reservation up to 9 months in advance. Additionally, each shelter area provides a camping area for tents and hammocks that also requires a reservation. Dispersed camping outside of these designated shelter areas is prohibited along the entire trail.
